Online Cash Games

Online cash games are games that are played in a virtual poker room (cyberspace) using real money. Many poker players do not have the ability to access a live poker room and with the advent of the world wide web, live "for money" poker sites are providing an exciting new venue for the passionate player. There are only a few differences in how one plays poker "online" versus playing in a live poker room.

When a poker player decides he wants to venture out into the world of online poker, he has to do a few things to prepare for play. First he must look at and compare all the sites available. He must look at what each has to offer, how many people are playing, what the rake is, and the validity of the site as a whole. After all, he is going to either send a money order directly to the site to open up and account, or place a given amount of money on his credit card to start a bankroll.

Playing online for money has its advantages. One may sit back and relax in the comfort of his or her home (no shirt or shoes required!). Wear what suits you best. Place your favorite food and beverage by your side. Turn on your favorite music, sporting event or movie. If you prefer, simply enjoy the jingling of the poker chips as they are played. You even have the option of silencing the game sounds from your playing area, if desired. Should you want to talk on the phone and play, no problem. Even bouncing a toddler on your knee, if you fancy doing that, is A-OK in your virtual card room. If you get a little hot under the collar, you can even talk to your computer. Tell it how you feel. The big thing to remember is...DON'T TYPE IT! Simple enough.

There is a chat window that will allow you to converse with the other players at your table. This makes the game interesting if you like to talk with other people from around the world. If you prefer to not be distracted by these "chatters", you may make the decision to turn your chat off. In the same window, the result of the previously played hand will appear. If you missed the showdown and are interested in what won the last hand, it will be clearly listed. It is completely up to you.

Watching for tells changes quite a bit. Of course you cannot see your opponents, so, you need to watch the opponents playing behavior. For instance, if you raise and the next player immediately re-raises, you can put him on a pretty good hand because he has probably already clicked his raise button prior to you acting. Just little subtle things like watching what people play at showdown will be helpful in determining what kind of players you are playing against.

You will have a timer placed on you. If you don't act within a specific amount of time, magic hands will toss your cards in for you and you will be out of that hand and in a "sitting out" status until you respond that you are back. This keeps players from walking away from their computers and timing out over and over again. This can be very fatiguing for the other players.

Just as in a live casino poker game, a player may change tables as frequently as he wishes. Online, he may even play two games at once if that is an option he wishes to exercise. However, it is not the wisest of choices. However, bouncing from table to table until you find the kind of game that suits you is just fine. If a loose game is what you want, then you will most likely find it. Perhaps you are looking for a low limit game where you think the beginning players may be. Normally a player may simply observe a table for a while prior to playing. On many online sites, the average pot size will be calculated and stated in a window for each table. Cash poker games are available online, and 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, right in the warmth and comfort of your own home.

A word to the wise is to play online if you want the practice and are not worried about losing an allotted amount of money. This is money you are willing to bet and lose for the experience, fun, excitement or thrill you get from playing the game of poker. If you can't get to a live poker room and this is your only avenue of play, just use your common sense and beware of the sharks. The water is full of them.
